Visa travel insurance – Your support as a foreign guest in Austria

Anyone planning a stay in Austria or the Schengen area will benefit from having good travel protection to keep them safe. HanseMerkur's visa travel insurance provides all-round cover for international guests travelling for up to 364 days. Find out why visa travel insurance is so important and what benefits it covers.

Vantages of Visa travel insurance

Whether you are visiting friends or family in Austria, travelling on business or planning a trip on your own through Europe – in case of illness, accident or other incident, you should be able to claim medical benefits and cover yourself financially. Visa travel insurance provides you with comprehensive protection during your trip and helps you avoid high unexpected treatment costs.

What benefits should visa travel insurance provide?

If you are travelling to Europe as a foreign visitor, you should make sure that your travel insurance meets the requirements for a so-called Schengen visa. The Schengen states include all European countries between which you can move freely without passport and border controls. With the exception of the United Kingdom, Ireland, Romania, Bulgaria, Croatia and Cyprus, the Schengen zone covers the entire European area.

What is the Schengen visa? As a Schengen visa holder, you can travel to all 26 member states of the Schengen area. But watch out: The visa only allows short stays of up to 90 days. Anyone planning a stay of more than 3 months in a Schengen country must apply for a national visa in the relevant country.

If you are entering Europe and Austria from a country requiring a visa, you are obliged to take out travel insurance. Important: If you are looking for travel insurance for a Schengen visa, make sure that the insurance:

  • covers all member states of the Schengen area.
  • has a minimum cover of € 30,000.
  • covers the costs of necessary medical assistance, emergency hospital treatment, medically necessary return transport and repatriation.

How do I find the right travel insurance for visas?

Travel insurance is only compulsory for travellers who have to apply for a Schengen visa. Nevertheless, we also recommend that travellers without a visa take out comprehensive insurance cover in the form of travel health insurance. Are you travelling in Europe on business? In this case, health insurance may already be included in your employment contract. However, this often only covers medical emergencies up to a limited sum insured. If you are treated by a doctor or go to hospital for other reasons, in the worst case you will have to pay for a large part of the costs yourself.

Our health insurance for foreign guests meets all the criteria for a Schengen visa. You can choose between two different plan variants. In both the Carefree and Premium plans, we cover all outpatient and inpatient treatment – for example, during a stay in hospital – as well as medicines and dressings at 100%. In both plans, we also fully cover medically reasonable return transport from the hospital to the home country and repatriation costs. The sum insured in a travel health insurance policy is € 50,000 in the Carefree plan and € 250,000 in the Premium plan.

You are younger than 39 years of age? In this case, we recommend our Young Travel travel insurance policy. As a young guest in Austria, you benefit from discounted premiums. The rates are staggered up to a person's 29th birthday and up to their 39th birthday.

We particularly recommend the Premium plan for travellers with visa requirements, which includes the incoming supplementary package in addition to international health insurance. With the additional package, you benefit from travel liability insurance (especially for possible deportation costs) and travel accident insurance.

Visa travel insurance: Do I have to expect deductible costs?

If you opt for the Premium plan for our international health insurance policy for foreign guests, a deductible will only be charged on a pro rata basis in the travel liability insurance policy. In cases of damage to rented property and deportation costs, a deductible of 20 % (at least € 50) will be deducted from the determined amount of damage. In cases of damage to the household of a host family, professional liability and loss of receivables, a deductible of 10% (minimum of € 200) applies.

Would you like to extend your stay in Austria or add a trip through Europe to your actual stay? Then take the opportunity to extend your contract and thus your travel insurance for visas.
