Au Pair-Insurance

Au Pair-insurance– All-round protection for your adventure abroad

Those who want to work as an au pair abroad often undertake their first long-term trip to a foreign European country or even overseas. You will benefit in many ways: You will live with a host family, expand your language and cultural skills and find new perspectives for your own future along the way. But anyone leaving their home country for six months, a year or even longer should prepare their adventure abroad well. If you fall ill during your stay and need medical treatment, au pair insurance protects you from high expenses.

What benefits are included in an au pair insurance policy?

You can organise your au pair stay individually according to your wishes. Therefore, you should individually adapt an au pair insurance policy to your needs. Travel health insurance is essential for your stay abroad. Make sure that this covers the costs of outpatient and inpatient medical treatment abroad in full, in the best case. Medically reasonable return transport to the home country should also be covered.

In order to protect yourself comprehensively during your stay, travel liability insurance makes sense. This is because financial risks can also arise from household damage in your host family's home or if you should lose the key to your host parents' house.

However, as an au pair, you should not only insure yourself in case of illness, we recommend that you also consider travel accident insurance. This covers costs resulting from accidents during your au pair stay.

How much does an au pair insurance policy cost?

The cost of an au pair insurance policy depends on several factors. These include the duration of your trip and whether you are planning to stay in the USA or Canada. In our different plans, we distinguish between worldwide travel with and without the USA/Canada. This is because the health care systems in both states are much more expensive than in Austria and other countries.

With our international health insurance for young people, you are comprehensively covered during your au pair stay. You can easily calculate your individual premium with the help of our online configurator. Once you have entered your travel duration and destination, select your travel health insurance policy with either Carefree or Premium cover. In the Carefree plan, you pay a daily premium of € 1.20 when you are 25 years old, for example, and € 1.50 per day when you are in the USA or Canada.

As it is not only important for au pairs to have travel health insurance, we recommend supplementing your cover with travel liability insurance, travel accident insurance and, if necessary, emergency insurance. Travel liability insurance covers unforeseeable household damage in your host family's home, for example. If you opt for this additional package, you pay a surcharge of € 0.20 per day in the Carefree plan.

What should I look out for in the plan variants?

Our international health insurance for young people is suitable for anyone up to the age of 39 who is living abroad with a family for a maximum period of 364 days. The rate levels are divided for people up to their 29th birthday and up to their 39th birthday. But even if you are older than 39, you can fulfil your wish of pursuing an au pair stay abroad. In this case, our long-term international health insurance is suitable, with which you can also optimally cover your stay up to 364 days.

Practical advice

  • Extending your stay or ending it prematurely? If you like your au pair stay so much that you would like to extend it, that is no problem. If you have taken out the insurance for 364 days or so, you can apply for a follow-up contract before the end of the term. You would like to end your stay early? To cancel, simply submit a written notice within 31 days of the end of the stay abroad.
  • Have you got a follow-up trip planned? You have successfully mastered your time as an au pair and now want to explore the country? If you have planned a follow-up trip, your travel insurance remains fully valid even without au pair status.
