Is there a deadline for taking out cancellation insurance?

Within 3 working days after booking the trip

Each insurance contract that includes cancellation protection insurance or excess insurance must be taken out no later than the 3rd working day (Monday - Saturday) after booking the trip (booking date + 3 working days). If the insurance is taken out later, insurance cover is only available for events that occur from the 10th day after taking out the insurance ("waiting period").

Who are the persons at risk (covered under this insurance)?

e.g. relatives of the spouse or life partner

  • Insured persons who have booked a trip and taken out a policy together
  • Your relatives and the relatives of your spouse or life partner: the spouse or partner in a marriage-like relationship, children, adopted children, step-children, foster children, children-in-law, parents, adoptive parents, step-parents, foster parents, grandparents, siblings, grandchildren, aunts, uncles, nephews and nieces
  • Those individuals who are looking after minor children or other dependent relatives, who are not travelling together with the insured person
  • A close person who must be declared when booking the trip and thus has the status of a risk person (thus all insured events that apply to the above-mentioned relatives also apply to this person)
Who is jointly insured?

6 persons

6 persons are jointly insured. We accept the cancellation costs or additional costs in the event of unplanned termination of the journey for all 6 persons, if there is an insured event for a person and all the persons have booked your journey together.

Are 2 families travelling together also jointly insured?

Yes, for joint travel booking

Two families have joint insurance and we accept the cancellation costs for both families (up to 14 persons!), if there is an insured event for a person and all the persons have booked your journey together.

Did you know? Facts about travel cancellation insurance

Save with annual insurance

Perhaps it has also happened to you at some point: The holiday is planned, the anticipation is great, but shortly before the start of the trip something comes up and the holiday falls through. The cancellation of a holiday can have many reasons: illness, damage to the house or pregnancy. In order to prevent financial loss in the event of cancellation, we recommend our travel cancellation insurance. Should only one person travel unexpectedly, we will reimburse you for the single room supplement up to the amount of the total cancellation costs.

Travel cancellation insurance in an annual package

If you travel several times a year for business or pleasure, you can often save money with annual cancellation insurance from just 2 trips per year. With our annual cancellation cover – including travel protection package in the event of illness, accident or liability damage – you are covered for 365 days on as many trips as you like. If you take out an annual contract, you will benefit not only from travel cancellation insurance but also, among other things, from cover in the event of travel irregularities (such as flight delays), from health and accident cover during the trip and from luggage insurance.

We recommend our travel insurance to holidaymakers travelling by car, bus or train. In addition to travel cancellation insurance, this low-cost package also includes motor vehicle assistance for breakdowns and accidents.

What are the differences in plans?

We offer two plans for travel cancellation insurance – "Carefree" and "Premium". In both the Premium and Carefree plans, you can expect no deductible. If you compare both plans with each other, your protection is even more extensive in the premium variant. Many additional events are insured and you will be reimbursed higher sums in the event of a claim.

Additional insured reasons within the premium plan are, for example, a financial loss (over €5,000) due to an accident or property crime. However, we will also pay the cancellation costs in the event of an unexpected worsening of an existing condition in the event of travel cancellation. If you have to cancel, rebook or delay your trip because your travel documents have been stolen and cannot be recovered by the time you leave, the insurance cover will also apply. 

Caution when it comes to credit card insurance

Many credit card providers advertise integrated cancellation insurance, provided you have booked and paid for your holiday with your credit card. The catch: Insurers often only cover the cancellation costs for the credit card holder in the event of a trip cancellation. If you travel with your family, they are often excluded from the insurance cover. With the HanseMerkur travel cancellation insurance, you have the option of insuring 6 people among each other within our family tariff. Should a family member not be able to make the trip for various reasons, we will cover the cancellation costs for all persons.
