Holiday Insurance

Holiday insurance – extensive protection on holiday trips

Looking forward to your well-deserved holiday is one of life's great anticipations. The certainty of being well covered in the event of an emergency is equally important. Whether you are planning a short trip of several days or a long-distance trip, it always makes sense to take out holiday insurance. This is because statutory health insurance does not cover all the costs that can arise during a trip abroad. Depending on the combination, holiday insurance covers medically necessary treatment abroad or protects you from cancellation costs if you cannot make your trip.

What benefits does a holiday insurance policy cover?

Holiday insurance includes any type of insurance cover you choose. For example, holiday insurance cover can span overseas health insurance and cancellation protection. But insurance for your luggage and rental car cover abroad are also counted as holiday insurance.

The benefits your holiday insurance should include depend on your personal need for security. Ask yourself the following question: What do you want to protect yourself from on holiday? If you fall ill during your trip and need medical treatment, protection against high treatment costs is elementary. Your holiday insurance should, therefore, include health cover abroad. If you take out an international health insurance policy with HanseMerkur, in the event of an emergency, we will cover, among other things, the transport of the patient to the nearest hospital, as well as any necessary return transport to Austria.

Despite increased caution, you cannot always protect yourself against loss or theft when travelling. In this case, luggage insurance protects you by replacing the value of the personal belongings carried and acquired on the trip.

Travel protection individually tailored to you

Are you unsure which holiday insurance policy is right for you? HanseMerkur offers a variety of holiday insurance policies to help you find a policy that meets your individual needs.

First of all, you should adapt your travel protection to how you will reach your holiday destination. For air travel, comprehensive cancellation and travel protection is available, which also covers you if your flight is delayed and you miss your connecting flight.

In addition to the type of travel, you choose the plan for your holiday insurance according to whether you are travelling as an individual, as a club, class or with your family. Do you like to travel with your family several times a year? Then we recommend annual cancellation insurance including travel protection. This covers you and your family comprehensively for a complete year (travel duration maximum 62 days per trip) before and during your travels. Cancellations, re-bookings and also loss of luggage or accidents are covered.

How much does holiday insurance cost?

The cost of holiday insurance depends on what insurance cover you want to take out for your trip. Factors such as the duration of the trip, the destination, the term of the insurance and the scope of benefits for the individual holiday insurance policy play a decisive role in determining your premium. As a rule: The longer you plan to travel abroad, the more important it is to have comprehensive insurance cover.

If you go on several short trips or journeys a year, taking out an annual international health insurance policy is the more cost-effective option for you. It is suitable for as few as two trips a year. With the annual insurance, you are fully covered on any number of trips up to a travel duration of 62 days each. We cover the costs of outpatient treatment by a doctor, inpatient stays in hospital or pain-relieving dental treatment.

With most HanseMerkur holiday insurance policies, you can choose between Carefree or Premium travel protection. Elementary benefits, such as the assumption of costs for a medically reasonable return transport to Austria, are, of course, included in both plans. Premium travel protection is particularly suitable if you want to cover a specific risk, such as a chronic illness. At the same time, many additional benefits increase your safety and security while travelling.

Review your existing insurance policies

Before taking out your holiday insurance policy, you should check whether any of your existing insurance policies offer cover and what benefits are included. Even if you already have travel insurance, it may not cover cancellation. If you have to cancel your trip for health or other reasons, you would incur such high costs. Also, check if your credit card covers additional travel protection. As a rule, this only applies to the credit card holder, but not to family members or spouses.

If you only have limited insurance cover, HanseMerkur's holiday insurance will protect you from financial loss. You can find comprehensive information about our services on our product detail pages. We are happy to help you find the travel insurance package that best suits your individual needs.
