Travel accident insurance

Travel accident insurance – fully protected in case of emergency

Are you planning an active holiday in the mountains or would you like to try out a new sport on your next trip? Whether it's skiing or a diving holiday – as exciting as sports trips are, increased activity on holiday always increases the risk of an accident. In addition to the health risks, a travel accident can, unfortunately, also quickly lead to high costs. In the event of an emergency, travel accident insurance covers the financial consequences of a travel accident.

Why is travel accident insurance useful?

Those who go on active holidays are constantly on the move: Hiking on uneven routes, surfing in the sea, camping in the mountains. Those who seek new challenges on the road always travel with a certain risk of accidents. But even without trying out new sports, there is a risk that you could have an accident while travelling. As this is a leisure time accident, statutory accident protection does not apply. The latter is limited to occupational and commuting accidents in addition to occupational diseases. If you already have private accident insurance, you should check whether it is limited to a shorter period than the actual duration of your trip.

HanseMerkur's travel accident insurance always covers the entire period of your travel dates and is a useful addition to your travel protection. The protection covers the costs resulting from accidents that are not covered by an international health insurance policy.

What benefits does travel accident insurance cover?

If you suffer a permanent physical or mental impairment to your own faculties (disability) as a result of an accident, the travel accident insurance will take effect.

In the event of disability, HanseMerkur's travel accident insurance supports you with up to € 40,000 in the Premium plan and up to € 20,000 in the Carefree plan, depending on the degree of disability. If it is an accident resulting in death, the heir is entitled to the sum insured of € 20,000 in the Premium plan.

Benefits for rescue costs are also integrated under travel accident protection. This includes, for example, search, rescue or recovery operations by rescue services, transport costs to the nearest hospital or special clinic, as well as additional costs when returning to the place of residence.

If you need cosmetic surgery due to an accident, we will cover this up to a sum insured of € 5,000 (in the Premium plan).

What is considered a travel accident?

An accident is deemed to have occurred if you involuntarily suffer damage to your health as a result of an external event acting on your body. Good to know for active holidaymakers: If you pull or tear a joint, muscle, tendon or ligament due to increased exertion, the insurance cover will apply. Likewise, if you are planning a diving holiday and suffer an eardrum injury after a dive or are affected by decompression sickness (caused by surfacing too quickly).

Please note that accidents due to mental or consciousness disorders, as well as alcohol consumption, are not insured. This also includes accidents caused by races involving motor vehicles.

How can I take out travel accident insurance?

Travel accident insurance is a useful addition to your travel protection. We, therefore, do not offer it as a stand-alone insurance policy, but have integrated travel accident cover into our insurance packages.

If you are planning a longer trip abroad up to a maximum travel duration of 364 days, we recommend our travel protection insurance. In addition to travel accident protection, you benefit from an equally important international health insurance policy that protects you against high medical treatment costs. Furthermore, luggage insurance and travel liability insurance provide you with additional protection. If you have to interrupt your holiday for various reasons within the first half of the trip, we will reimburse you the price of the trip within the included travel curtailment insurance. You do not pay a deductible.

Should you need medical assistance or suffer an accident, you can reach our emergency call service around the clock. We advise you and inform you about local doctors and hospitals.

Would you also like to cover yourself before your trip in case you have to cancel your holiday? In this case, our cancellation and travel protection with included travel cancellation insurance is suitable.
